LISBON
The natural harbor of the Tagus beckoned sailors throughout
the ages. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors
all had ties to Portugal. Begin your exploration of Lisbon
in the old quarter of the Alfama, visit the ornate 16th-century
Jeronimos Monastery, and relive the opulence of the 18th and
19th centuries with a visit to the Royal Coaches museum.
COIMBRA
Coimbra was once the capital of Portugal, and the birthplace
to six of Portugals kings from 1139 to 1256. It is also
home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Of particular
interest is the library, Biblioteca Joanna, which houses an
amazing collection of more than 300,000 books dating back
to the 12th century.
PORTO
Porto, the City of Bridges, is Portugals
second largest city. Its charm stems from its dramatic position
above the river, with gabled houses closely terraced on a
hill. Stroll through the Medieval city center, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Sample the tasty regional cuisine and rich
Port wine, from which Porto derives its name.
RÉGUA
Régua is the center for Port wine production. Visit
a local inn for wine tasting and a lecture on Port wine. Relax
for an evening at Solar da Rede, a beautifully restored 18th-century
pousada manor house located high above the river.
VILA REAL
Fruit orchards and vineyards surround scenic Vila Real. Visit
the nearby village of Mateus, with a country house belonging
to the Counts of Vila Real. It is a splendid example of Baroque
architecture. Explore the formal gardens and unique 100-foot
cedar tunnel.
SALAMANCA
One of the loveliest and best preserved of the old Spanish
cities, Salamanca justly deserves its place on the World Heritage
list. It is a city of golden stone architecture, narrow cobblestone
streets, beautiful plazas, and a 13th-century university.
Enjoy the hearty cuisine and rich red wines, hallmarks of
this region.
PINHÃO
Marking the end of the Port Wine Trail, Pinhão
is a typically rustic Douro town. Of particular interest are
the azulejos (glazed tiles) that decorate the
railway station, and the dramatic vine-clad terraces, dotted
with white inns where Port wine is produced and bottled.
LAMEGO
Situated south of the Douro, enchanting Lamego is a major
market center set amid vineyards and lush, fertile countryside.
The town boasts several fine buildings, including the 18th-century
pilgrimage church Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, a Gothic cathedral
and an 11th-century castle.
BITETOS
Savor dinner in a 14th-century former Benedictine Monastery
(Monastery of Alpendurada). But first, join us for a Port
wine cocktail on the monasterys terrace, which offers
breathtaking views of the river valley below.
